predominate

Thursday, 2. September 2010 21:01

‘I had a letter from him this morning giving me his approval. He has been urging me to marry for some time.’

It occurred both to Julia and myself simultaneously that we were allowing curiosity and surprise to predominate; now we congratulated him in gentler tones from which mockery was almost excluded.

‘Thank you,’ he said, ‘thank you. I think I am very fortunate.’ ‘But when are we going to meet her? I do think you might have brought her down with you.’

He said nothing, sipped and gazed.

‘Bridey,’ said Julia. ‘You sly, smug old brute, why haven’t you brought her here?’

‘Oh, I couldn’t do that, you know.’

‘Why couldn’t you? I’m dying to meet her. Let’s ring her up now and invite her. She’ll think us most peculiar leaving her alone at a time like this.’ ‘She has the children,’ said Brideshead. ‘Besides, you are peculiar, aren’t you?’

a branch of show business

Thursday, 2. September 2010 21:01

The rest of these Friday-pieces are arranged more or less in the order of fheir composition, presentation, or publication.

The semi-expatriate American writer Gore Vidal has denigrated American universities as “a branch of show business.” Most non-American writers I’ve met, whatever they think of our universities in general, are either politely amused by or openly contemptuous of our “creative writing” programs — virtually nonexistent outside the U.S.A., as they were inside the U.S.A. before World War II. The raw numbers involved in that quixotic enterprise certainly invite some skepticism: See my Friday-piece “Doing the Numbers,” farther on in this book.

But I share neither of these attitudes and do not admire the judgment of those who do. One of the considerable pleasures, for this writer, of working full-time in various American universities has been the opportunity to hear other writers — foreign, domestic, “academic,” nonacademic, anti-academic, even anti-rational — perform and talk about their inventions, as well as lecture upon other matters, well or badly, but seldom unrevealingly.

Socrates in the Symposium

Monday, 30. August 2010 10:23

How I wish that that fantasy were a fact: that I could be that genie, and meet and speak with the talented, wise, and beautiful Scheherazade.

One part of it is a fact: Dunyazade, the narrator of my story, recounting the genie’s first appearance to the sisters, says, “Years ago (the genie told us), when he’d been a penniless student pushing book-carts through the library-stacks of his university to help pay for his education, he’d contracted a passion for Scheherazade upon first reading the tales she beguiled King Shahryar with, and had sustained that passion. . . powerfully ever since. . .” What Diotima was to Socrates in the Symposium, Scheherazade has always been to me; her name stares at me from a 3×5 card above my writing table, both to encourage me when the critics are working me over — for I’ve never doubted since first meeting her that she is my true sister — and, contrariwise, to chasten me when my stories are overpraised, for I’ve never doubted that that true sister is immeasurably my superior.

Nevertheless, there are two white lies in the genie’s protestation. First, Scheherazade’s is not the only name on that 3×5 card: My very big brothers Odysseus, Don Quixote, and Huckleberry Finn, towards whom I harbor similar feelings, join her in buoying me up and staring me down. And second, it was never Scheherazade’s stories that seduced and beguiled me, but their teller and the extraordinary circumstances of their telling: in other words, the character and situation of Scheherazade, and the narrative convention of the framing story.

The clothing outlets are booming! Find out why you should get in on this fashion act!

Monday, 30. August 2010 10:23

The clothing outlets first made their debut back in the 1980s, mainly concentrated in large metro areas, beginning on the East coast and quickly migrating to locations on the West coast. At first, the average consumer was not aware of the huge purchasing advantages afforded by these clothing outlets. Instead, the mainly women patrons consisted of women who could well afford a plenteous wardrobe, but chose to use the clothing outlets to double their wardrobe with designer clothes, handbags, shoes and accessories offered at twice the price of the upscale, 5th Avenue department stores. Hey, why not?

It didn’t take long for word of these heavily discounted, quality wardrobe finds to spread. One neighbor told another. Would you believe I got this wool designer coat for $150?! I saw the exact same coat at Nieman Marcus last week for $350! That’s inspiring talk for any woman.

At that time, most of the clothing outlets were in huge, department store sized buildings and carried every type of garment and accessory you’d need. Not only that, but other popular home items, like bedding and linens were part of the stock. While these stores did away with the normal decorative frills shiny display cases, plush carpeting and fancy window displays, they had the goods! What woman could resist snapping up a designer dress or suit and a couple of handbags at such prices? So what was the catch? No catch at all, unless you couldn’t deal with the lack of store trimmings, external glitz and the lack of a sales person offering you personal attention.

Diabetic Meal and a Healthy Diet

Thursday, 12. August 2010 3:01

A diabetic meal is aimed at complementing the medication for controlling the glucose levels in the blood. With a strict diabetic meal plan, the amount of medication can be reduced and eventually eliminated. In addition to this intended benefit, a diabetic meal can become a healthy diet that the entire family can adapt.
Diabetes is a condition in which the body does not produce enough of insulin, a hormone which helps in controlling the metabolism of sugar in our body. This consequently results in an abnormally high amount of sugar in the blood. High blood sugar or hyperglycemia is a critical condition as it silently yet steadily harms a variety of internal organs. Kidneys, Eyes, Nervous system all fall prey to this silent killer. There are a variety of reasons why one would end up in a diabetic condition. However, therapeutic application of drugs will invariably be a indispensible part of the approach. The very important other part of any approach is a healthy lifestyle including a Diabetic meal.
The diabetic meal should be balanced with the insulin that is administered. It is important to couple the diet plan with an exercise regime for the best results. There is a lot of free diet plans tailored for diabetic patients available online. One can choose the plan that accommodates his/her personal preferences. Typically the meal should contain one third of fruits and vegetables, one third of dairy products and fish, and one third of cereals and breads. Even occasional sweets are permitted.

I had been in business for a few years

Tuesday, 10. August 2010 1:41

I never really contemplated a career in consulting Until I had been in business for a few years. I was in a pretty toxic workplace. Not only was it not a fun place to work, but it was also not a very well organized or a rational workplace. everyone knew it, but no one seemed to do anything about it. The boss was pretty burnt out, and he didn’t really want any advice from anyone. The workers were pretty burnt out, and most of us were worried about keeping our jobs. Other people were looking for new employment as quickly as possible. In desperation, the upper management hired one of the top consulting firms. What they did was amazing.
First of all, they fired my boss. For that alone, I would have been grateful. But when they reorganized the entire structure of the business, I was completely blown away. Most of the things that they said were wrong were things that I could have pointed out my own. The thing was that, because they were an outside opinion, the management was more willing to listen to them. I can not tell you how much of an improvement they made to the company. Suddenly, it was a fun place to work again. Yet instead of motivating me to stay at the same job,I was encouraged to leave and seek out a consulting career. Although it was a little bit rocky starting over again, it was more than worth it. I have loved every moment of my work for consulting firms.
